Facebook launches 'action links' for greater app interaction

Facebook introduced a new feature today designed to help developers engage users more deeply with their app content.

In addition to "liking" and "sharing," the social network's customizable "action links" give users a third way to interact with content when users' Open Graph stories appear in news feeds, timelines, or tickers.

Facebook demonstrated how the new links could be used by using the geo-location app Foursquare as an example. When users check in at a location using the app on their Timeline, their friends can already like or comment on the post. But the new feature allows developers to add customizable links, such as a link that says "Save this Place," allowing friends to save the place to their Foursquare to-do list.
In another example, Facebook showed how design site Fab.com adds a "Fave this Product" that adds the product to users' favorites lists.

"Action links tie one action to another, and can be part of any Open Graph story," Facebook's Alex Wyler wrote in a company blog announcing the new feature. "Developers can designate an action link for any action they define, which will then appear throughout Facebook."

Developers interested in creating their own action links can get more information at Facebook's documentation page.

Runkeeper is partner Pebble, first smartwatch app

The Pebble smartwatch has been a runaway success story for Kickstarter’s crowdfunding model, with almost $8 million pledged for the project so far. Now Runkeeper, a popular app for measuring and tracking your fitness, is joining in on the fun as Pebble’s first app partner at launch.

Pebble integrates with your Asus Android smartphone via Bluetooth, and uses its E-Ink display to show information like incoming call data, calendar entries, and social media updates. After years of failed attempts at a truly useful smartwatch, it looks like Pebble has struck a chord with consumers with its elegant design and customizable app experience.

Jason Jacobs, CEO of Runkeeper, wrote on the AndroidCourt blog today: “We know that many of you are always looking for ways to make your fitness tracking easier, and with Pebble integration, you won’t ever have to pull the phone out of your pocket or armband – you can just see and do everything you need right from your watch.”

As one of the more than 53,000 people backing Pebble, I’m glad to see the company is already building up its app ecosystem. Runkeeper has already proven itself as one of the most useful exercise apps on the market, so it seems like a perfect fit for Pebble.

Notably, Pebble was initially rejected by venture capitalists when it was seeking funding. But now with its massive Kickstarter success, the company is able to turn its dream into a reality without giving up any equity.

Pebble still has two weeks left in its Kickstarter pledge round, which means the company could see close to $10 million in pre-sales at this current rate. The smartwatches are scheduled to ship sometime in September (though I’m hoping the extra funds will help the company get it out earlier).

Google Docs puts design font and center

Google added a whopping collection of 450 fonts to its online document service Google Docs today - thus freeing your text from years of enslavement by the likes of Arial, Courier New, and the universally reviled Comic Sans.

Well, you know what Comic Sans? We’ll just see how comical you are within a sea of equally goofy font style options now available to co-workers, friends, and family members who have zero grasp of basic design principles.

Google Docs users can add the new font styles by clicking on the font menu in the tool bar and selecting the “Add fonts” option at the very bottom. From there you’ll see the entire menu of web fonts available, such as Economica, Princess Sofia, Jolly Lodger, Happy Monkey, Dynalight, Wallpoet, Lobster one, Lobster two, and Esteban. All of your chosen fonts are displayed alphabetically in a sidebar to the right. You can click the “X” to remove any font you decide you don’t plan on using. That sidebar will then appear in the “font styles” tool bar when you’re working within a doc.

And even with all the new font options, if the white document background isn’t doing for you anymore Google has added over 60 new document templates for you to choose from.
